The specialized care of patients whose conditions are life-threatening and who require comprehensive care and constant monitoring, usually in intensive care units.
Patients with acute, life-threatening illnesses or injuries are treated with critical care (also called intensive care). There are many of us who will experience a critical illness or injury as a patient, family member, or friend.
Life-threatening conditions are treated with critical care. Emergency rooms treat patients suffering from minor injuries (sprained ankles, broken arms) as well as more serious problems like heart attacks, knife or gunshot wounds, or drug overdoses. As part of its duties, the Emergency Department stabilizes patients and transports them to the ICU or other areas of the hospital for further treatment. A critical ill or injured patient's long-term care is the responsibility of ICU professionals.
